Concealed Ribbon Burners and Media-Covered Beds

The Phenom was the brand's first residential fireplace with a concealed ribbon burner, a long slotted burner that can be buried under glass media so the flame appears to rise straight out of the bed. The Prodigy and other linear lines use the same idea. The result is clean and modern, but it puts the media in charge of how the gas leaves the burner.

When media is piled too deep, raked into ridges during cleaning, or replaced with a different size, the ribbon of flame breaks up, goes patchy, or turns yellow. On these units we lift and level the media to the depth the manual specifies before judging the flame, and we use only media sold for that burner. The Distinction adds reflective ceramic glass liners and multi-colour LED uplighting as standard, both of which change what a dirty or damaged bed looks like. Its circulating fans come standard as well, and the fan intake under the firebox gathers dust that should be vacuumed out each year.

Direct Vent, Power Vent, and the Pipe Sizes Behind Them

The residential range splits between direct-vent and power-vent fireplaces. DelRay, Phenom, Paragon, Distinction, and Divine units are mostly direct vent, using 4x7, 5x8, or 5x10-inch pipe depending on the model, with approved alternate pipe from several venting makers allowed by the manual. Some can be fitted into an existing chimney using co-linear conversion parts.

The Exemplar is the power-vent series, with viewing widths from about 38 inches up to nearly 98, and its fan-driven venting lets a fireplace sit far from an outside wall. A power vent unit needs electricity and a working fan before it will light, so it stays off during an outage. On any of these, a carbon monoxide alarm on the same floor is worth having; if it sounds, switch off and ventilate before calling.

What Goes Wrong on a Montigo in Langley Homes
